UNESCO recognizes two villages of Odisha as tsunami ready
UNESCO recognizes two villages of Odisha as tsunami ready. The communities of Venkatraipur (Boxipalli) village of Rangeilunda block of Ganjam district and Noliasahi village of Ersama block of Jagatsinghpur district have been acknowledged by Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO for greater preparedness to face the tsunami disaster. With this recognition, India is the first country in the Indian Ocean Region and Odisha is the first state to prepare communities as Tsunami Ready. In a virtual event on 07 August, 2020 'Certificate of Recognition' has been given to these two communities viz., Venkatraipur and Noliasahi as Tsunami Ready villages. Sri Pradeep Jena, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary and Managing Director, Odisha State Disaster management Authority (OSDMA), Govt. of Odisha received the award from UNESCO official. The communities of the both Noliasahi and Venkatraipur villages in presence of district collectors have received the certificates in the event. The virtual event was organized by Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWMS) Secretariat in Perth, Australia and Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) in Jakarta, Indonesia. A meeting was held in OSDMA under the Chairmanship of Addl. Chief Secretary (DM) and Managing Director, OSDMA for discussion on the draft guidelines communicated by NDMA for ‘Administration of Disaster Mitigation Funds’. The representatives from Departments like Water Resources, Works, Forest and Environment, School and Mass Education, Steel and Mines, Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Women and Child Development and Mission Shakti, Fishery and Animal Resources Development, Tourism, Energy and international organisations like Inter Agency Group and UNDP along with senior officers of OSDMA were present in the meeting. The different components and implementation modalities of the draft guidelines were discussed thoroughly during the meeting. The ACS and Managing Director, OSDMA highlighted the importance of utilising the Mitigation Funds for triggering actions for major changes in reducing the disaster risks and how the mitigation funds to be utilised for enhancing the resilience of public and private infrastructures. Additional Chief Secretary to Govt. & Managing Director, OSDMA chaired the Training Programme on ‘Chemical Disaster Management on 10.01.2020 at OSDMA Conference Hall Bhubaneswar. Director, Disaster Management Institute, Bhopal, Unit Head of IFFCO, Paradeep, Chief General Manager, OSDMA, General Manager (F&B), Officers from Districts and departments and OSDMA among others were present in the meeting. Various aspects of chemical disaster management were discussed during the workshop. Accreditation of certifying institution, certification of disaster management plans and professionals in addition to standards of storage tanks, inspection strategies were some of the important points discussed during the workshop.
