OSDMA received the Lightning Resilience Award 2019
Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) received the Lightning Resilience Award 2019 for its outstanding work in Lightning Risk Management. Director-General Indian Meteorological Department, Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra handed over the award to Bikramaditya Barik, Joint Secretary, office of Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha. The award is a part of Lightning Resilient India Campaign 2019-2021. This is a joint Initiative of Climate Resilient Observing Systems Promotion Council CROPC) and India Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Science. SW Monsoon 2019 Lightning Report was released at Vrishti Auditorium, Mausam Bhawan by Climate Resilient Observing System Promotion Council (CROPC) and IMD during the inaugural function of two days Symposium on Lightning Resilient India Campaign.

Odisha State Disaster Management Authority had organized the State level programme for observation of Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day and National Day for Disaster Reduction at Rabindra Mandap Bhubaneswar on 29.10.2019. Sj. Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Odisha had graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Sj. Sudam Marndi, Hon’ble Minister, Revenue & Disaster Management, Odisha had presided over the function. Sj. Asit Tripthy, Chief Secretary, Odisha and Sj. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD, New Delhi had joined the occasion as Guest of Honour. Theme of the Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day for the year 2019 was “Empowering Community for Disaster Resilience”. Exhibition on Disaster Response equipment was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister on the occasion. Hon’ble CM also unveiled the Annual Newsletter of OSDMA “The Response” and felicitated volunters, agencies & institutions for their commendable works done in the field of Disaster Management for the year 2019.

Series of meetings were held on 19th October, 2019 to review the Onsite Emergency plan and Disaster Control mechanism of Major Accident Hazards Installations. The meeting was conducted under the Chairmanship of Shri Satya Ranjan Sahoo, Chief General Manager (I), OSDMA. Participants from Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), Paradeep, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Paradeep Refining & Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL). Among others present officers from district Administration, ODRFA, Directorate of Factory & Boilers, Police, Fire Service department and officers of OSDMA.

Floods have been a recurrent phenomenon in India and cause huge losses to lives, properties, livelihood systems, infrastructure and public utilities. Taking in to account the need and importance of the issue, NDMA in collaboration with Ministry of Jal Shakti organized a workshop on “Management of Floods: Reservoir Management and other Preventable Measures” on 18.10.2019 in New Delhi. The Workshop jointly Chaired by Member Secretary, NDMA & Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation. From Odisha, Shri Pradeep Kumar Jena, IAS, Principal Secretary to Government (DM) & Managing Director, OSDMA participated in the Workshop. The stakeholders i.e., CWC, IMD, GSI, NRSC, & Civil Society Organizations are also invited to participate in the Workshop.

The increasing number of disasters in recent years has already exceeded the disastrous events predicted, and this upward trend has become even more apparent as over 200 million people are affected each year since 1994. Hence, understanding disasters are important to evaluate correctly the challenges that such cataclysms pose and the growing need to find appropriate ways to reduce disaster risk. The role of indigenous knowledge in managing this risk has been recognized in international frameworks for disaster risk reduction (DRR). In the above context, Utkal University in collaboration with OSDMA organised an International Seminar on Disaster Risk Reduction & Community Resilience on 20-21 September 2019 in Krishi Bhawan Auditorium. Delegates from different countries, states, universities and academic institutions participated in the Seminar and presented different papers on Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Resilience for developing Policy Framework. Shri Pradeep Kumar Jena, IAS, Managing Director, OSDMA, Prof. Amita Singh, JNU, Dr. Swarnmayee Triapthy, Professor Utkal University and Dr. Padmalaya Barala, Professor Utkal University graced the inaugural session.
